The flavonoids in cocoa are catechin, epicatechin, procyanides, and proanthocyanidins. Chocolate on a per-weight basis has the highest concentration of these flavonoids of any food. Cocoa is loaded with a variety of phytonutrients, making it very high in antioxidants.

The Perfect Combination

The Açai Berry
Another new powerful antioxidant that can be blended in with chocolate is the Açai berry from the Amazon. Açai has been touted as one of the superfoods of the world. It contains many phytonutrients. In fact New York Times best selling author Dr Perricone listed it on the Oprah Winfrey Show as the number one superfood in the world.
Harvested from a special Amazon palm tree, Açai berries contain higher amounts of antioxidants than any other fruit.
Açai is a great source of anthocyanins, which again help protect the heart, prevent blood clots, relax the blood vessels, and has antiviral and antiallergenic properties. It has more than 30 times the amount of anthocyanins than red wine.
The essential fatty acids in this berry (essential fatty acids are the ones required by our bodies to function that have to be provided by diet) include oleic acid (a monounsaturated omega-9 acid) and linoleic acid (polyunsaturated omega-6). These fatty acids help lower the (bad) LDL cholesterol oxidation, and maintain the (good) HDL cholesterol levels.
This berry also has a protein profile like eggs (it contains all of the same amino acids) and is high in fiber, both of which are important for maintaining our health. It also has COX-2 inhibition and can limit generalized inflammation in the body.
The berry is loaded with minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium and many trace minerals like chromium and copper. The açai also contains naturally occurring B-vitamins, vitamin E, and vitamin C. It is related to saw palmetto, a natural remedy for prostate enlargement, and may also have the same action. The benefits of this berry are just starting to be realized.
The Marqui Berry:

Amazing Health Benefits of Maqui Berry:

Introduction to Maqui Berry - The Amazing Super Food!
Rachel Ray first mentioned themaquiberry (pronounced as "maaki berry" or maki berry) on her TV show, and now everyone is talking about this powerful little purple berry from a place called Patagonia, in South America. Rachel was not the first to discover its amazing qualities, however; the Mapuche Indians from that southern region have been using it for medicinal purposes for years. So, what's so great about this berry?
Rachel Ray credits it with helping her lose some annoying belly fat, and that does seem to be one of its properties. As the berry works to improve overall health in a person, it enables the body to cooperate with losing excessive weight.

Weight Loss & Slimming - How does Maqui berry helps to lose weight?
Maquiberry slimmingThe answer lies in understanding its function as an anti-oxidant super store. In fact, this little purple berry has twice as many anti-oxidant levels as its nearest competitor, the acai berry.
This means it can do serious damage to all those rebellious little free-radical cells crashing around in your veins and arteries, doing incalculable damage to your internal systems. With these bad guys diminished and the chemicals and toxins that supported them, driven from your body, overall good health can start to become the norm. When your body is truly healthy, it will work with you to lose those annoying extra pounds that may be holding you back.
Anti-aging & anti-inflammatory:
In addition to weight-loss assistance, the maquiberry has shown real potential as an anti-inflammatory. Anyone who has or is suffering from joint swelling and pain knows how debilitating these conditions can be. Quality of life goes down as activities are curtailed and pain becomes an ever-present frustration.
If this berry truly makes a difference here, millions of Americans could get back to doing the things they live without wincing in pain at each movement.
Fights Cancer:
If that were not enough, there is some interest in the maquiberry as an anti-cancer agent. It seems that it contains a natural COX-Z-inhibitor that can help fight off attacking cancer cells.
All-in-one Nutrition:
The maquiberry offers a lot for its size. It is a tasty little fruit, packed with nature's goodness in the form of calcium, Vitamin C, iron, and potassium. It seems to be able to help the body fight back against invasive harmful cells as well as collaterally aiding in weight loss.
The berry's anti-inflammatory qualities may help sufferers of joint disorders, giving them back their active lifestyles. Cancer may be less welcome in conjunction with regular maquiberry intake. The aging process will slow down as we become more youthful and active again. That's a lot of potential in one small purple berry.
Oxigen Radical Absorbance Capacity of Maquiberry. (ORAC)

As you can see from the above image, maqui berry contains maximum amount of ORAC value- better than even Acaiberry!
The whole cocoa bean contains insoluble fiber and soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol levels and can help block fat absorption, create a feeling of fullness when eating, and is associated with decreased weight. Fiber has been shown to be extremely beneficial in improving sugar metabolism, and preventing constipation. Obviously, if you eat too much, your caloric intake can make you gain weight. Fortunately, when eating unprocessed cocoa that uses low glycemic sugar, it takes very little chocolate to feel satisfied and obtain extremely high antioxidant levels.
Chocolate helps stimulate production of serotonin. According toMassachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Dr Judith Wurtman: "When serotonin is made and becomes active in your brain, its effect on your appetite is to make you feel full before your stomach is stuffed and stretched.
"Serotonin is crucial not only to control your appetite and stop you from overeating; it's essential to keeping your moods regulated."
New research at the Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE), University of Copenhagen shows that dark chocolate is far more filling than milk chocolate, lessening our craving for sweet, salty and fatty foods. In other words, eating dark chocolate may be an efficient way to keep your weight down. Dark chocolate also gives more of a feeling of fullnessthan milk chocolate.
In this study, people who ate dark chocolate before their meal, ate 15% less calories than when they ate milk chocolate.
Healthy Chocolate And The Heart
The high level of antioxidants in UNPROCESSED dark cocoa have a profound effect on reducing the "bad" cholesterol from sticking to the walls of your arteries.
Prof. Rodger Corder mentioned also in his presentation that the quality of the chocolate can be measured by the amount of flavonoids.
Antioxidants in cocoa might help your heart by keeping your blood vessels relaxed, thus easing blood pressure and helping circulation.
So says a study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study shows that cocoa's antioxidants — called flavonoids — coax the body into making more nitric oxide, which relaxes the blood vessels.
The researchers included Norman Hollenberg, MD, PhD, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He tells WebMD that cocoa's flavonoids could improve heart health.

Healthy Chocolate And Diabetes
Flavonoids, natural plant compounds also found in tea, red wine, and certain fruits and vegetables, are responsible for cocoa’s healthful benefits. In fact, according to new research published in the June 3 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), after diabetic patients injested specially formulated high flavonoid cocoa for one month, blood vessel function went from severely impaired to normal.
“Patients with type 2 diabetes can certainly find ways to fit chocolate into a healthy lifestyle. Research focuses on what’s at the true heart of the discussion on “healthy chocolate”—it’s about cocoa flavonoids, the naturally occurring compounds in cocoa,” Dr. Kelm said. “While more research is needed, our results demonstrate that dietary flavonoids might have an important impact as part of a healthy diet in the prevention of cardiovascular complications in diabetic patients.”
Umberto Campia, M.D., who co-wrote an editorial about the new study in the same issue of JACC, noted that diabetics are an ideal population in which to study the effects of flavonoids on arterial function, because high blood sugar damages the endothelium and because these patients have a high risk of cardiovascular disease.

A group of researchers from the University of Hull and the Hull York Medical School have found that dark chocolate has significant health benefits for people with Type 2 diabetes.
"Short-term administration of dark chocolate is followed by a significant increase in insulin sensitivity and a decrease in blood pressure in healthy persons"
"Research over the past decade has identified [cocoa] flavanols as showing diverse beneficial physiologic and antioxidant effects."
A single acute serving of flavanol-rich cocoa showed that flavanol-rich cocoa can increase cerebral blood flow."
